What New Jersey requires for auto insurance
New Jersey raised its minimum auto liability limits for new and renewal standard policies issued on or after January 1, 2026. The new minimums are $35,000 for bodily injury per person, $70,000 for bodily injury per accident, and $25,000 for property damage.
Those minimums protect other people, not you. A serious crash can cost far more than the limits, and you are responsible for the difference. Many drivers choose higher limits for that reason.
New Jersey also has rules about personal injury protection and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, and you can choose between different lawsuit options on some policies. We walk through what applies to you when we quote.
