If you’re leased to a motor carrier, the carrier’s policy may cover you while you’re under dispatch. Once you’re off duty or driving for personal reasons, that coverage usually stops. If you run under your own authority, the whole insurance package is on you. Mixing up these two setups is one of the most common and expensive mistakes owner-operators make.
Coverage to Understand
Non-trucking liability (bobtail). Covers you when you’re driving the truck but not under dispatch. Bobtail and non-trucking liability aren’t always the same coverage, so we check which one your lease calls for.
Occupational accident. Some owner-operators carry it in place of workers’ compensation. It isn’t the same coverage, so compare the benefits before you choose.
Physical damage. Covers the truck itself after a collision, theft, fire or storm damage. If the truck is financed, your lender will likely require it.
Cargo and general liability. Usually needed when you run under your own authority. If you’re leased on, check what your carrier already provides.
How We Help
We go through your lease agreement and dispatch setup with you, so you don’t pay for coverage your carrier already provides or miss coverage it doesn’t. The goal is a policy built around how you actually earn, not a one-size-fits-all trucking package.
