Understand Medicare Advantage Before Choosing a Plan
Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is a way to receive Medicare benefits through a Medicare-approved private plan. You must have Parts A and B to join. Most plans include prescription coverage, but benefits and costs differ. A plan that fits one person may not fit another. Medicare.gov explains the parts of Medicare.
Check Medical Coverage and Extra Benefits
Plans cover medically necessary services covered by Original Medicare and may offer additional benefits. Dental, vision, hearing and other extras can have networks, allowances, exclusions and benefit limits. Do not assume a plan covers every service or prescription. Some services, including hospice, are paid through Original Medicare even when you remain in an Advantage plan. Compare the actual plan documents with your needs.
Confirm Doctors, Hospitals and Plan Rules
An HMO generally requires network care, with exceptions for emergencies, out-of-area urgent care and temporary out-of-area dialysis. Referrals are commonly needed. A PPO generally permits covered out-of-network care at a higher cost and does not require specialist referrals. Prior authorization may apply. Check your doctors, facilities and travel needs with the plan before enrolling. Compare plan types on Medicare.gov.
Compare the Full Cost
A $0 plan premium does not mean all care is free. You generally continue paying the Part B premium, and plan deductibles, copayments and coinsurance can apply. Review the medical out-of-pocket limit and any separate in-network and combined limits. Premiums, noncovered services and prescription expenses should be reviewed separately; Part D has its own rules and spending protection. Review current Medicare cost information.
Review Prescription Coverage
Check whether the plan includes Part D, whether your medicines are on its formulary, any restrictions, and your pharmacy’s status. Drug coverage arrangements differ by plan type. Do not add or drop a separate drug plan without checking how it affects your current coverage. Review Medicare health-plan options.
Understand Enrollment Timing
Annual Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31 for people already in an Advantage plan. Special enrollment opportunities depend on your circumstances. If you have employer or union coverage, consult its benefits administrator before making changes. Check enrollment rules on Medicare.gov.
Request an Agent Review
An OG Insurance HQ agent can discuss the options the agency offers and questions about doctors, medicines, costs and enrollment. An inquiry does not enroll you, establish eligibility or change your existing coverage. Keep current coverage until any approved change and effective date are confirmed.
